October is Small Business Month

The High River Chamber of Commerce pays tribute to the contributions that all businesses make to the Canadian economy.

Small Business owners are tireless entrepreneurs who inspire and nourish the entrepreneurial spirit that powers our economy.

Together, we celebrate their achievements.

Please make every effort during the month of October to stop by anyone of our local businesses and thank them for their sponsorship and entrepreneurial spirit.

Bow Valley College update

Bow Valley College – Foothills Region has been very busy! We have full programming starting Fall 2018, have met all of our regional enrollment targets, and our new Transport Canada approved Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drone) aviation ground school (AVTN9201 andAVTN9202) has generated national attention. Okotoks and High River Business Series partnerships offered in conjunction with several regional stakeholders welcomed 100 entrepreneurs and small business owners over the 2017/2018 school year. Our Canadian Language Benchmark testing and LINC Classes remain popular and are running again this fall. If you know someone curious about our Fall 2018 credit, non credit and dual credit programs, please have them visit bowvalleycollege.ca/okotoks and bowvalleycollege.ca/highriver for more information.

This Fall, we are increasing academic supports available for all Bow Valley College students. We are now staffed to provide academic support and one to one support for BVC students taking classes delivered through online, regional and traditional delivery methods as they study while living in the Foothills Region. Remote counselling services and technology orientation sessions are also now available for every Bow Valley College student. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our new Dean and vision for our department along with our new learners this year.

On that note, we are very pleased to announce that Leah Wack will be joining Bow Valley College as Dean, Regional Stewardship, effective August 13, 2018. Leah comes to us from Lethbridge College where she has been serving in the role Manager of Regional Stewardship since 2011.

Leah has more than twenty years of experience in the post-secondary sector in various areas including: program administration and development, government relations, student services, community and stakeholder relations, and partnership development. She also has a broad range of post-secondary programming, leadership, and regional stewardship experience from Selkirk College, the University of Alberta, and the University of Lethbridge. Leah has been the Chair/Co-chair of the provincial regional stewardship committee for the past five years and has developed a strong network of relationships with the Ministry of Advanced Education, community stakeholders, and other comprehensive community institutions in Alberta.

Leah completed her undergraduate studies in secondary education, business and technology from the University of Alberta, and continued there to achieve her graduate degree in educational leadership. Throughout her career in higher education, she has been involved in the implementation of new institutional systems and operational and organizational reviews.

I look forward to continued collaborative efforts and innovation with our Foothills stakeholders in the coming months (best over coffee, of course!) as we work to improve access to high quality post-secondary education and career-related training in our thriving communities.

Best Regards,

Samantha Schellenberg

Dear Chambers:
It feels great when you can help a local chamber member save money. How much better would it feel if you won a $250 or $500 gift card for helping them save 3.5¢ per litre on all of their fuel purchases? Getting that feeling is easier than you think.
Download, share and win!
Visit this link to download information on the Esso Business Card program, then share the ready-to-use marketing material on your website and you’ll be entered to win a $250 Visa Gift Card.
Be social and double your chances of winning.
Better still, share any of our Alberta Chamber Facebook or Twitter posts
promoting the Esso Business Card program and we’ll double your chances of winning with another entry into the contest! Just be sure to use the hashtag #ACCFueledByEsso to be eligible for the contest.
Grand Prize: The more you promote, the better your chances.
In addition to the $250 gift card, we’re also giving away a $500 Grand Prize Visa Gift Card to the local chamber that earns the highest percentage of member sign-ups — meaning the highest percentage of sign-ups relative to your total local membership — in the Second Quarter of 2018.
That means, the more you promote and convert sign-ups to the Esso Business card among your members, the better the odds of winning the Grand Prize.
Now wouldn’t that feel good!
We look forward to seeing your media shares. If you have any questions on the program or this contest, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
